Successful Midyear for COP Students and Faculty

The USC College of Pharmacy made a splash at the America Society of Health-System Pharmacists' December 2024 Midyear Meeting, held in New Orleans, Louisiana, where students and faculty had the opportunity to network and attend professional development seminars with their peers from across the nation.

The college’s residency programs and affiliated Prisma Health residency programs made their case for upcoming residencies as part of the Residency Showcase, including the college’s newest fellowship offering in academia.

Maegan Lamb, Class of 2025, presented her research focused on the impact that direct pharmacist intervention can have on hypertensive patients in medically underserved areas.

“This project showed that a pharmacist-prescriber approach via a collaborative practice agreement resulted in an almost 4-time quicker time to targeted blood pressure control achievement compared to a prescriber-only approach,” she says. “The use of pharmacists in this setting also resulted in decreased hospitalizations and improved antihypertensive pharmacotherapy adherence. We hope this project further advocates for the utilization of clinical pharmacists in chronic disease state management, especially in rural settings, as pharmacists are key to quicker results in chronic disease state management.”

Dalan Solomon, Class of 2025, credits his three years of attending Midyear as instrumental in shaping his professional growth.

“This year, I showcased my research titled “Evaluation of the Effectiveness of an Electrolyte Replacement Protocol in Critically Ill Patients at a Multicenter Academic Medical Center,” which focused on assessing the prescribing adherence and effectiveness of an electrolyte replacement protocol in critically ill patients.” he says. “Conducting and presenting this research was a rewarding experience that allowed me to contribute to optimizing patient care and engage with other professionals passionate about advancing pharmacy practice.”
