January 2025 Alumni Spotlight – Meghan Bennett

Meghan Bennett (Bachelor of Music, flute performance) is Director and Music Assistant Professor of Woodwind Studies at New York University and serves on the Flute and Chamber Music Faculty of The Juilliard School Preparatory Division. We recently caught up with Meghan to ask her some questions about her time at the USC School of Music.

What person, course or experience was most influential for you while at the School of Music? How?

Years after graduating, Dr. Jennifer Parker-Harley continues to play a significant role in my life. The foundation she laid for me was nothing short of extraordinary. While we’re immersed in the day-to-day challenges of school, it’s only after graduation that we truly gain perspective and begin to appreciate the full scope of our education. Looking back, I realize how invaluable her influence has been in shaping my journey. I am deeply grateful to her for creating the solid foundation that has supported me throughout my career, one that I feel incredibly fortunate to have.

What ensemble(s) did you perform with while at USC?

USC Symphony Orchestra and USC Wind Ensemble

How has your education at the USC School of Music helped you in your life and career?

USC provided such a comprehensive education that, as an adult, I now realize is not something every university offers. I’m incredibly grateful for the professors I had and the diverse range of classes I was able to take while studying on this beautiful campus. I feel fortunate to have had access to such an enriching academic environment.

What is one of your favorite memories, classes, professors or activities while attending the School of Music?

I have countless memories, but the one that stands out most is the sense of “home” I felt there. It truly became a second home‚ one filled with people I enjoyed learning from and growing alongside.

What advice would you give current students or recent graduates pursuing a music performance or music education career?

Can I quote Lady Gaga? “There’s a disciple for passion. And it’s not about how many times you get rejected or you fall down or you’re beaten up. It’s about how many times you stand up and are brave and you keep on going.”

What is one of your proudest professional or personal accomplishments that occurred after graduating from the School of Music in which your education played a role?

Art has a unique way of intertwining with both our personal and professional lives. I feel incredibly fortunate to be living my dream in music, in one of my favorite cities.
