November ’24 Alumni Spotlight – Bianca Raso ’09

Bianca Raso (Bachelor of Music in voice performance) is a chorister with the Seattle Opera. We recently caught up with Bianca to ask her some questions about her time at the USC School of Music.

Why did you choose the USC School of Music?

I chose USC School of Music because of the palmetto trees and sunshine. As an international student, South Carolina offered an adventure and a new start.

What ensemble(s) did you perform with while at USC?

Carolina Alive; Concert Choir; Graduate Vocal Ensemble; Opera at USC

What person, course or experience was most influential for you while at the School of Music? How?

Ellen Schlaefer. Working with Ellen in Opera Workshop and with Opera at USC was most influential for me. She prepared us well for working in professional theatre settings, from creating a well-rounded character to understanding the inner workings of designing and bringing a show from the page to the stage.

How has your education at the USC School of Music helped you in your life and career?

My education at USC prepared me to be a professional in the rehearsal room and in performance settings. This knowledge translates easily to one's day to day life; practicing patience, focusing and listening, being adaptable and accommodating.

What is one of your favorite memories, classes, professors or activities while attending the School of Music?

My favorite memories are from traveling, both in the US and around the world, with Dr. Larry Wyatt and the Concert Choir. We saw the world and created outstanding music all while making lifelong friends. I think fondly of these trips often.

What advice would you give current students or recent graduates pursuing a music performance or music education career?

My advice to recent graduates is to create your own projects and continue working towards your goals without focusing too much on timelines and the successes of others. It's also important to nurture yourself creatively outside of your professional endeavors. Taking time for hobbies and the things you love will ultimately make you a better, happier musician and educator.

What is one of your proudest professional or personal accomplishments that occurred after graduating from the School of Music in which your education played a role?

One of my proudest professional accomplishments is performing at The 5th Ave Theatre in their recent production of Sondheim's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Do you have any upcoming performances you can share with us?

I will be performing with The Seattle Opera chorus in their upcoming concert of Les Troyens à Carthage as well as their production of Tosca.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
