March ’24 Alumni Spotlight – Jeffrey Penn Johnson, ’15

Jeffrey Penn Johnson (Bachelor of Music, composition) is a full time composer working in film for such companies as DreamWorks, Cartoon Network and Disney. He is also a visual artist whose current works can be viewed at the Messengers Gallery in Santa Monica, CA. We recently caught up with Jeff to ask him some questions about his time at the USC School of Music.

Why did you choose the USC School of Music?

I chose the USC School of Music because the staff was the most friendly and welcoming of all the schools I applied to. I received a scholarship for pipe organ and studied with Dr. Jared Johnson and also received a scholarship for euphonium and studied with Dr. Ron Davis. I played baritone for the Mighty Sound of the Southeast for every football game for all four years of my college career.

What ensemble(s) did you perform with while at USC?

Carolina Band and University Band

What person, course or experience was most influential for you while at the School of Music? How?

My favorite course was orchestration with Dr. Rogers. For my final project in his class I wrote an original piece of music that was played by the USC Symphony Orchestra. Hearing my music played by a top-level orchestra and getting feedback from the musicians and conductor was extremely valuable for building my skill set and was a euphoric experience.

How has your education at the USC School of Music helped you in your life and career?

I use my musical skills every day in my film scoring projects. I also play organ at my church in Bel Air. I'm thankful for the time I invested in my skill set during my college years.

What is one of your favorite memories, classes, professors or activities while attending the School of Music?

My favorite memory at the school of music was having my original music performed by an ensemble at the New Voices Concert. Hearing my music come to life as my colleagues performed it for an audience is a treasured experience for me.

What advice would you give current students or recent graduates pursuing a music performance or music education career?

Take care of your mind and body as you pursue your goals. I used to think of myself as a music-making machine, which is why I worked myself to the bone without regard for my health. Now I think of myself more as a garden - needing rest, inspiration, and nourishment as I grow.

What is one of your proudest professional or personal accomplishments that occurred after graduating from the School of Music in which your education played a role?

Orchestrating and composing music for shows made by DreamWorks, Cartoon Network, and Disney.
