December ’24 Alumni Spotlight - Nové Deypalan

Nové Deypalan (Doctor of Musical Arts in Instrumental/Orchestral Conducting) is the Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Conducting Workshop & Competition and Music Director of St. Nicholas Church in Laguna Woods, CA. Nové will also be serving as guest conductor with the USC Symphony Orchestra on their Evening of Alumni concert on December 5. We recently caught up with Nové to ask him some questions about his time at the USC School of Music.

Why did you choose the USC School of Music?  

I chose USC School of Music in South Carolina because of its renowned faculty who are not only accomplished musicians but also dedicated educators. The vibrant and supportive musical community at USC provides endless opportunities for collaboration and growth. Additionally, the state-of-the-art facilities and diverse program offerings align perfectly with my aspirations as an aspiring musician.   

What ensemble(s) did you perform with while at USC? 

USC Symphony Orchestra

What person, course or experience was most influential for you while at the School of Music? How?

The most influential experience for me at the School of Music was studying under the tutelage of Dr. Scott Weiss & Dr. Donald Portnoy. During my time as a student, I received invaluable feedback on my performance technique and interpretation, which challenged me to refine my skills and rethink my approach to music. The artist's insights and encouragement of my conducting professors not only boosted my confidence but also inspired me to explore my own style, ultimately shaping my artistic identity.

How has your education at the USC School of Music helped you in your life and career? 

My education at USC School of Music has profoundly impacted both my personal growth and professional development. The rigorous curriculum and hands-on experiences equipped me with essential skills in musicianship, conducting, composition, and collaboration, preparing me for various roles in the music industry. Furthermore, the extensive network of alumni and industry connections I cultivated during my time at USC has opened doors for performance opportunities and collaborative projects, helping me establish a successful career in music.

What is one of your favorite memories, classes, professors or activities while attending the School of Music? 

One of my favorite memories at the School of Music was performing and conducting in the concerto competition concert, where I had the opportunity to showcase both my individual talent and collaborate with my peers. The energy in the auditorium was electric, and the supportive atmosphere created by my classmates, orchestra, and professors made it a truly unforgettable experience. Additionally, working closely with Professors Weiss & Portnoy, whose passion for music and dedication to teaching inspired me every day, made this event even more special, as their guidance helped me bring my very best to the performance.   

What advice would you give current students or recent graduates pursuing a music performance or music education career? 

I would advise current students and recent graduates pursuing a music performance or education career to stay open-minded and embrace every opportunity for growth. Actively seek out diverse experiences, whether through internships, performances, or collaborations, as they will broaden your skill set and deepen your understanding of the industry. Additionally, networking with peers and professionals is crucial; build strong relationships, as they can lead to valuable mentorships and job opportunities. Lastly, remember to prioritize your passion and creativity, allowing your unique voice to shine in every endeavor you undertake.

What is one of your proudest professional or personal accomplishments that occurred after graduating from the School of Music in which your education played a role?

One of my proudest accomplishments after graduating from the School of Music was premiering Dream of a Hundred Flowers by Fang Man at Carnegie Hall. My education provided me with a strong foundation in musical theory, arrangement, and collaboration, which were essential in leading any ensemble effectively. The skills I honed at USC, particularly in communication and leadership, allowed me to foster a creative environment and bring the production to life, resulting in a successful run that received positive reviews from the community. This experience not only solidified my passion for music direction but also reinforced the importance of the comprehensive training I received at USC.

Do you have any recent news of accomplishments, awards or major life events you can share with us?
