Music education program welcomes new associate professor


Lani Hamilton joins the University of South Carolina School of Music in the Fall of 2025 as an Associate Professor of Music Education (Orchestral Specialist). 

Lani HamiltonDr. Hamilton will teach classes in music education and orchestral methods to everyone from undergraduate to Ph.D. students, as well as direct the USC String Project, a nationally recognized community music program now in its 51st year. 

An accomplished educator, researcher and performer, Hamilton holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in violin performance from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami and the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin. She earned her Ph.D. in Music and Human Learning from the University of Texas in 2017, where she was also the coordinator of their String Project outreach program. 

Hamilton is joining USC from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory, where she has served as an associate professor since 2017. She brings a wealth of experience as an administrator, teacher,  performer and a researcher, focusing specifically on musical practice. Her research examines how performers evaluate and critique their performances in real time.


Music Education at USC

The music education program at the USC School of Music prepares students to become the music instructors of tomorrow while providing significant performance, teaching, leadership and research opportunities. Bachelor's, master's (MME/MAT) and doctoral degree (Ph.D.) programs are available.

USC String Project

The USC String Project offers instruction in violin, viola, cello and bass through group classes and orchestras. All classes take place in the beautiful String Project Building adjacent to the School of Music Building at 851 Park Street, Columbia, SC.
