of the University of South Carolina

A RESOLUTION

-TO-

HONOR THE CENTENNIAL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA SCHOOL OF MUSIC, RECOGNIZING ITS LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE AND URGING ITS HIGHEST VIRTUES

Sponsored by Senator Castellow

WHEREAS, the University of South Carolina School of Music, founded in the year of 1924, has served as an enduring pillar of musical and cultural refinement, standing as a beacon of artistic and intellectual excellence, admired not only for its academic offerings but for its role in shaping generations of highly accomplished musicians; and

WHEREAS, the School of Music’s mission has, for a century, been rooted in the pursuit of the timeless principles of artistic integrity, discipline, and showmanship, fostering an environment where true talent and dedication are rightfully cultivated; and

WHEREAS, the School of Music, in its history, has withstood many trials and societal shifts, which have, at times, led institutions to place increased emphasis on new priorities; and

WHEREAS, despite these pressures, the School of Music continues to be recognized for its exceptional contributions to both the university and this great southern region, consistently producing graduates whose talents have been lauded across the nation and the world, further elevating the reputation of the University of South Carolina; and

WHEREAS, the School of Music’s centennial presents a timely opportunity to reflect upon the values that have brought the institution to its current prominence, for as Socrates wisely proclaimed, "the unexamined life is not worth living," reaffirming the importance of maintaining a focus on artistic rigor, moral integrity, and the elevation of those who truly embody these principles; and

WHEREAS, in an age where discussions around institutions often emphasize shifting priorities, it is of utmost importance that the School of Music remains steadfast in its commitment to the excellence of its students, faculty, and programs; the essence of tradition lies in the pursuit of higher truths that elevate the human spirit. Therefore, it is essential that enduring values are never obscured by ephemeral concerns, preserving the integrity of intellectual endeavors to foster a culture of genuine artistic and moral excellence.

NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED by the 116th Student Senate of the University of South Carolina,

THAT, this Senate hereby recognizes and honors the University of South Carolina School of Music for its remarkable century of service, its commitment to artistic and cultural successes, and its continued efforts to uphold the values that have made it a paragon of education; and
