Jazz Takes Center Stage at University of South Carolina’s Speakeasy Fundraising Event

On October 23, 2024, the University of South Carolina School of Music created a vibrant homage to the Roaring Twenties with its Speakeasy Jazz fundraising event. Attendees gathered at local restaurant Prohibition, where the Left Bank Big Band ensemble delivered a captivating performance reminiscent of the early days of jazz.

The evening was a blend of music, dance and delectable cuisine, showcasing the incredible talent of USC's premier jazz students and faculty. The event was sponsored by Bert and Brenda Ligon, the Friends of the School of Music and Sonic Sunshine Benefit.

Beyond the entertainment, the event raised crucial funds for students to participate in the prestigious Umbria and Vienne Jazz Festivals in Italy and France next summer. This initiative reflects the School of Music’s commitment to providing its students with exceptional opportunities to showcase their talent on an international stage.

“The Speakeasy event was not just about enjoying great music; it was about creating pathways for our students to shine globally,” said Matt White, Director of Jazz Studies. “We are grateful for the support from our community, which helps us nurture the next generation of jazz musicians.”

The more than 100 attendees donated, knowing that their contributions would play a vital role in the students’ journeys abroad. The funds raised will help cover travel expenses, allowing our students to represent the University of South Carolina, the School of Music and the Jazz Studies program.
