Invoke, a bowed and fretted string quartet performs on October 13
Invoke, a dynamic young string quartet based in Austin, Texas, integrates singing, poetry and folk instruments – the banjo and mandolin – into their performances. They perform on the Southern Exposure season opening concert on Friday, October 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the University of South Carolina School of Music Recital Hall (813 Assembly St). The concert is free and early arrival is encouraged to this popular series as seats fill to capacity.
Winners of the 2016 Savvy Chamber Competition at USC, the ensemble returns for a weeklong residency at the School of Music October 9-13, culminating with their Southern Exposure show.
Invoke’s American Postcards project holds a magnifying glass to the concept of American identity. From picture brides in Hawaii to tent revivals in Texas, this endeavor digs deep into the tangled roots of our cultural narrative with an emphasis on specific events that have shaped modern American society. Inspired in part by historical photographs, shown during the concert, this program includes world premieres of four newly-commissioned works by young American composers Ian Dicke, David K. Garner, Takuma Itoh and Steven Snowden. The composers will be in attendance to discuss their pieces.
This Southern Exposure concert features visual art by Columbia resident and Carolina native Dave Robbins, a surrealist painter and landscape designer. Works by Robbins will be on display in the USC Music Library, School of Music second floor, during the weeks surrounding the concert.
