USC awarded Chamber Music America’s residency partnership grant

School of Music receives support for Parker Quartet's community-based residency

Chamber Music America (CMA), the national network for ensemble music professionals, has announced the grant recipients of its 2014 Residency Partnership Program that supports ensembles and presenters in building audiences for classical, contemporary, jazz, and world chamber music through residency projects.

The Parker Quartet, which will perform its residency through the University of South Carolina, was chosen to receive the 2014 Guarneri String Quartet Residency, which recognizes the artistic excellence of a young string quartet grantee. The residency was endowed in 2005 by the Sewell Family Foundation to honor the Guarneri String Quartet on the occasion of its 40th anniversary.

A total of $75,000 has been awarded to three ensembles and five nonprofit presenting organizations for projects that engage audiences beyond the concert hall and in community settings, with the goal of increasing awareness of and appreciation for small-ensemble music. The Residency Partnership Program is supported by the Chamber Music America Endowment Fund.

The 2014 grantees are: Bang on a Can (NY), in partnership with Mass MoCA, as well as the North Adams School District and Mayor's Office; the Chamber Music Society of Detroit (MI), presenting the Cavani String Quartet, in partnership with Cass Tech High School, the Detroit School of the Arts, and Okemos High School; Da Camera of Houston (TX), presenting Jason Moran and the Bandwagon, in partnership with the Menil Collection, Mitchell Center at the University of Houston, the Gregor-Lincoln Education Center, and the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts; Jazz House Kids (NJ), presenting Oscar Perez Nuevo Comienzo, in partnership with Elizabeth High School; Quinteto Latino (CA), in partnership with Enriching Lives Through Music; the Steve Griggs Ensemble (WA), in partnership with the Seattle Public Library; University of South Carolina School of Music (SC), presenting the Parker Quartet, in partnership with Still Hopes Retirement Community, SC Department of Juvenile Justice, Birchwood School, Lexington High School, and Greenville Fine Arts Center; and UW World Series (WA), presenting the Catalyst Quartet, in partnership with Seattle Music Partners, Leschi Elementary School, Roosevelt High School, the Seattle Collaborative Orchestra, the University of Washington School of Music, the Seattle Youth Symphony, and Arts UW.
