Daylong event January 4 provides All-State preparation workshops and master classes
If you’re a high school or middle school trumpet or trombone player interested in getting a seat in the All-State Bands, you don’t want to miss USC’s Trumpet and Trombone Day on Saturday, January 4. The All-State audition preparation workshops on regional band audition materials are a chance to polish your audition materials.
Anyone interested in learning more through master classes, workshops and instrument vendors may attend the full day event for $10, and parents of participating students may attend free. A 2:00 p.m. recital by guest artists Steve Leisring, trumpet (University of Kansas) and Sam Schlosser, trombone (San Francisco Opera) is included in the registration.
A variety of clinics will be offered throughout the day – there will be a master class on each regional audition piece for each instrument, and master classes with guest artists Steve Leisring and Sam Schlosser will focus on the finer points of playing.
USC music education students, many of whom have participated in All-State Bands, will be sharing their insights and best practices to 7th through 12 grade workshop participants.
The event takes place at the University of South Carolina School of Music (813 Assembly St., Columbia, SC 29208) beginning with the 9:00 a.m. registration at the door and concluding at 6:00 p.m. Parking is conveniently available in the Discovery parking garage behind the School of Music on Park Street.

About the Guest Artists
Steve Leisring, associate professor of trumpet at the University of Kansas, began there in 2003 after performing for 14 seasons with the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, Canary Islands, Spain. As a member of the orchestra, he can be heard on more than 35 commercial CD’s on the Deutche-Gramophone, Decca and Auvidis-Valois labels.
Leisring has performed in major halls and festivals in Europe and has been heard on radio and TV broadcasts of live concerts and recordings by the Tenerife Symphony programmed on NPR, BBC, NDR (Germany), ABC (Australia), and RNE (Spain).
Samuel Schlosser joined the San Francisco Opera Orchestra as principal trombone in 2013. Before coming to San Francisco, he was a member of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. He has appeared with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Seattle Opera and the New York Philharmonic.
An avid teacher, he has given master classes at the Mannes College New School for Music in New York and at the Jacob's School of Music at Indiana University in Bloomington.
Schlosser received his formal training from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where he was a student of Nitzan Haroz, principal trombone of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
