Internationally renowned jazz pianist Eldar Djangirov comes to USC

School of Music and Jazz Studies area bring extraordinary talent to Columbia Oct. 31

Eldar Djangirov, whom Dave Brubeck labeled “a genius” will soon be wowing an intimate audience in the School of Music’s Recital Hall. New York City-based pianist, composer and Grammy nominated artist, Djangirov explores new frontiers through composing and performing, enabling him to realize his own musical vision.

“Rare is the opportunity to witness the profoundly virtuosic and uncommon diversity of such a musician as Eldar, and even rarer still is such an opportunity presented in Columbia and free for the first 200 people who can get in! Eldar's talent and command are powerful and distinctive -- hearing his performances is an unforgettable experience. We are so honored and delighted to be able to present him within the context of our excellent jazz program.” -- Tayloe Harding, USC School of Music dean

The accolades, raves and press reviews heaped on the 26-year old prodigy Djangirov are numerous.

The New York Times described Djangirov as "a blend of musical intelligence, organizational savvy, enthusiasm and prowess that was all the more impressive for seeming so casual... an ebullient impressionist." Jazz Times said, “Maybe he made a pact with Lucifer to be the greatest pianist ever." Downbeat magazine stated,"…his command of his instrument is beyond staggering."

Djangirov spent his youth listening to the sounds of Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Bill Evans, among others. He was signed to Sony Classical at the age of 17, which allowed him to work with the masters of jazz whom he grew up listening to.

The success of his album, “Re-imagination,” resulted in a Grammy nomination in 2008, and his latest release, “Breakthrough” has earned acclaimed as well.

Dan Bilawsky of All About Jazz says, “Djangirov's passive-aggressive pianistic tendencies make ‘Breakthrough’ into a tale of two personality traits. One minute he might be ruminating on a classic theme in contemplative fashion and the next minute he might be tearing through one of his tricky originals like a post-modern Chick Corea on uppers. This who-knows-which-Djangirov-you'll-get approach is at the heart of the brilliant ‘Breakthrough.’”

The USC community and the public can see and hear Djangirov on Thursday, October 31 at 7:30 p.m. in the School of Music Recital Hall at 813 Assembly Street, Columbia, SC 29201. Admission is free.
