Adventures in Sports Entertainment

In this sports driven course, students will be introduced to the sport industry as a professional endeavor. The class provides a broad overview of sport management by presenting extensive discussions of the foundational aspects of the profession and current topics from the sport industry. Students will have an introduction to the following components of the sport industry: management, ethics, leadership, communications, marketing, finance, event management and entrepreneurship. The course will include and combine theoretical foundations, exercises, activities, and projects designed for practical application of the leadership concepts. In addition, the students will be exposed to industry leaders and networking opportunities through a variety of site visits (virtual and actual) to sport organizations. Examples of organizations that may provide executives to speak to the students may include: NASCAR, Carolina Panthers, Columbia Fireflies, Charlotte Hornets, PGA, and USC Gamecock Athletics.

Andy Gillentine

Andy Gillentine is a Professor in the Department of Sport and Entertainment Management at the University of South Carolina. In 2017, he was awarded the Sport Management Scholar Lifetime Achievement Award by the Applied Sport Management Association.  He was named Distinguished Sport Management Educator in 2012 by the North American Society of Sport Management and in 2009 received the Sport Management Outstanding Achievement Award from the National Association of Sport and Physical Education. In 2022, he received the Mihalik Global Scholar Award for his promotion of international education programs and opportunities. In the fall of 2022, Dr. Gillentine was awarded the Michael J. Mungo Teaching Award in recognition of his commitment to innovative and quality educational instruction. He is internationally recognized for his expertise in sport management curriculum and program development and has participated in sport management program and curricular enhancement activities in more than a dozen countries. During his career in the sport and entertainment Industry, he has developed, organized, managed, and evaluated hundreds of sport and entertainment events and overseen the operation of dozens of sport and entertainment facilities over the last four decades. Additionally, he is recognized as one of the leading experts in the study of the legal, managerial, and marketing aspects of tailgating. He has conducted research projects for numerous sport organizations that have resulted in over 50 publications, four books and over 150 national and international presentations.
