Meet Your Instructor
Joseph Bias
Joseph Bias is the General Counsel/Special Advisor to the President at Midlands Technical
College. He is the 2019 South Carolina Bar Young Lawyer of the Year.
After graduating law school and becoming a member of the South Carolina Bar, Joseph
clerked for the Honorable Alison R. Lee in Columbia, the Chief Administrative Judge
of Richland County’s common pleas (civil) court at the time. Following his clerkship,
Joseph became an Assistant Public Defender for the Richland County Public Defender’s
Office, gaining valuable trial and daily courtroom presentation experience while regularly
handling a high volume caseload. From there, Joseph practiced insurance defense for
seven years.
Joseph is the volunteer attorney coach for the award winning Richland Northeast Mock
Trial team. Additionally, Joseph is a former Co-Chair for the South Carolina Bar Young
Lawyer’s Division Protecting Our Youth Committee and a member of the Palmetto Health
Foundation “Kemopalooza” Committee. Joseph was recognized as the Law-Related Education
Lawyer of the Year by the South Carolina Bar in 2017 and with South Carolina Lawyer
Weekly's "Leadership in the Law" honor for 2018. He was recently named one of The
State (Columbia, SC) Newspaper's "Top 20 Under 40" professionals in the Midlands area.
In 2018, Joseph became one of the co-hosts of "Direct Examination: The South Carolina
Lawyer Podcast" which has featured prominent lawyers, judges, and politicians.
