Seminar Presentation - The Power Beyond Performance: Human Wellbeing and Active Music
Making Recital Hall, 1:10-2:00 p.m. Exploring the impact active music making can have on human wellbeing, taking note that what we study as musicians has an impact far beyond performance and can affect the daily lives of every individual. This will be a hands-on seminar, where playing will be the departure point for conversation. |
Congaree New Horizons Bands - Beyond the Horizon: Creative Play! String Project, 6:30-7:20 p.m. The drum circle asks only that you be yourself, explore rhythm and sounds in the spirit of Play! Participants will have the opportunity to use our percussion instruments & bring their instruments into the circle and explore the tonal and the atonal too! |

Percussion Department - Becoming a resource: Drum Circle Facilitation and Creating
Wellbeing Room 016, 8:30-9:40 a.m. This hands on experiential workshop provides insight into how you as a percussionist can engage communities to create connection, wellbeing and address many of the challenges they face. Recent research has shown that there are both physiological and psyco-social benefits to group drumming for every imaginable population. Serving as a resource to these growing populations, a global community of over 25,000 drum circle facilitators is actively engaged in facilitating musical experiences and training new facilitators. |
About John:
John Fitzgerald, Manager of Recreational Music Activities, Remo Inc., BFA, has designed and facilitated rhythm experiences for community awareness, team-building, wellness, communication and leadership for 20 years. Creating deeper awareness in service of positive change for individuals, communities and organizations is a primary aspect of all of John’s work.
For the past 18 years John has been the Manager of Recreational Music Activities for Remo Inc., where he works with both domestic and international organizations, creating relationships that nurture the use of music- making for wellness, intervention, and therapeutic outcomes. Presentations and facilitated experiential activities, at conferences and symposia, have been a central part of John’s work.
He has studied the art of Ontological Coaching with Julio Ollala, founder of Newfield Network, Somatic Coaching at the Strozzi Institute, facilitation with Arthur Hull, founder of Village Music Circles, and has taken the HealthRHYTHMS Group Empowerment Drumming Facilitation Training, among others. John is past chairperson of the Interactive Drumming Committee at the Percussive Arts Society, a Village Music Circles Certified Trainer and a member of the International Coach Federation.
