2022-2023 Season
The University of South Carolina Symphony Orchestra's 2022-2023 season is based on suggestions by ensemble members. The season opens on Thursday, September 22 with Gustav Holst’s celestial showpiece, The Planets. The piece has become one of the best known of all orchestral compositions due to its emotional scope and grandeur. The concert begins with Valerie Coleman’s anthem for unity, UMOJA.
Grammy Award winning cellist Zuill Bailey is back! A long-time audience favorite in Columbia, Zuill is returning Tuesday, October 25. This time he’ll be playing the Dvorak, the greatest of all cello concertos! Opening the concert is Stravinsky’s charming Dumbarton Oaks Concerto and the evocative D’un matin de printemps by French composer, Lili Boulanger. The piece by Lili Boulanger is sponsored by an anonymous donor.
The season theme "Power and Empower" bursts to life Tuesday, November 29 with the arrival of fiery pianist Natasha Paremski playing Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2. Paired with Brahms’ masterful Symphony No. 3, this evening is full of some of the most emotional music ever written. Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2. is sponsored by Adair Pianos.
The dreariness of winter is banished when superstar composer meets superstar pianist!
In 2022 Awadagin Pratt performed the world premiere of Jessie Montgomery’s new piano concerto Rounds with the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra. He will return to SC on Tuesday, February 7 to perform it in an all-American concert that also features Copland’s Appalachian Spring and the Symphony No. 1 by Columbia’s own Meira Warshauer.
Always an audience favorite, the soloists and repertoire for our Tuesday, March 21 Rising Stars concert are winners of the University of South Carolina School of Music's October 2022 Concerto-Aria Competition.
The season boldly concludes with the energetic cantata Carmina Burana Thursday, April 20. Featuring over 200 performers, this will be a season finale not to be missed! Based on the 24 medieval poems of the same name, Carmina Burana explores life’s delights, unpredictability, and excesses. Opening the concert is an energetic new work by British composer Anna Clyne entitled Pivot. The concert features soloists Serena Laroche (soprano), Martin Bakari (tenor) and Edumund Milly (bass-baritone).
