The Smart Start Nursing Program, being an out-of-state student and getting involved in research!
Hi everyone! My name is Maddy, and I'm a sophomore in the Honors College! I love going to the beach, trying new coffee shops, and going to country concerts! After graduating, I hope to work as a NICU or Pediatric nurse, eventually become a Nurse Practitioner and possibly open my own practice. I absolutely love working with kids and can't wait to get to take care of them everyday!
- Hometown: Spring Lake, NJ
- Major: Nursing

Why I chose the South Carolina Honors College
When looking at schools, I knew I needed a change from my small hometown and the small schools I had gone to my whole life. I wanted a big school with lots of resources and opportunities, but I still wanted a close-knit community of driven, focused students like myself. The SCHC provides just this, with the small class sizes and unique honors classes the SCHC is truly its own small community within this huge school. By having smaller class sizes, you can foster close relationships with not only your peers but your professors as well. Also, being a nursing major in the SCHC allows me to take unique Honors Nursing classes that have given me hands-on experience starting my very first semester.
My advice for prospective students: My biggest piece of advice would be to go to the school that feels like home. No matter how far away from home it may be (for me it's 12 hours away!), you should pick the school that makes you feel the most comfortable, supported, and excited to be a future student. Also, don't let outside opinions sway your decision, choose the right path and the right school for you!
Favorite question during an information session: "What is your favorite part of the Honors College outside of the classroom?"
The Honors community! From my first week at USC, I've felt so supported and welcomed by everyone in the Honors College. Being in the Honors College makes this huge school feel just a little bit smaller, which is something I really appreciate. If I walk anywhere on campus, I know I'm bound to run into at least one Honors student that I recognize which I love! Being in Honors adds another layer of community to your college experience, so you will always feel supported here!
Favorite Honors class: My favorite Honors class is definitely SCHC 284 - Introduction to Clinical Lab Science! This is a class designed for Smart Start Nursing Students, and focused on the laboratory aspect of the healthcare field. In this class we learned how to decipher blood and urine panel results, perform a blood glucose test, perform blood typing and (my personal favorite) draw blood using a model arm. Being able to look at blood test results and come up with a series of follow up tests and possible diagnoses made me feel like a real nurse, an experience I would not have had without Honors!
