A Top Scholar's First-Year
Even before our first-year Top Scholars arrive to campus in the fall, our Scholar Programs staff helps their adjustment to college life through a Scholar Big. Scholar Bigs are upper-level students that first-year scholars correspond with during the summer before they begin college. Then, Top Scholars attend a dedicated orientation, a welcome reception and participate in a first-year scholar retreat. They are also assigned to small groups led by a peer leader, who serves as a guide to help them navigate their first year on campus from start to finish. Additionally, Top Scholars have priority registration for parking spaces and garages as well as the Honors Residence Hall.
Community & Events
We keep Top Scholars connected through weekly emails with reminders of office-sponsored programs and deadlines, as well as university opportunities and announcements. Top Scholars are regularly invited to special events and engagements where they are asked to speak about their university experience. We also offer a full calendar of programs. Top Scholars join others for various events throughout the year, including multiple dinners and other programs as resources allow.
Holistic Advising and Top Scholar Appointments
Scholar Programs staff are available to discuss academic and co-curricular plans all four years. First and second-year Top Scholars receive special invitations to initiate these connections. Appointments are easy to schedule for students to chat with staff members on any topic. Note: Separate academic advisors will provide guidance on your course selection.
Top Scholars interested in competing for national fellowships have full access to the National Fellowships advising staff who can help them navigate the process.
