Virtual Reality Apps Library

The Center for Teaching Excellence VR Graduate Assistants have researched and obtained VR Apps covering a wide range of subjects. We offer a variety of apps that are provided with the VR headsets. The Apps Library consists of apps that are included on our headsets and some that are not included but have been researched by the CTE. Apps are organized by category and vary by price, platform, and features. The CTE continues to research and update the apps library on a regular basis for faculty and staff.

Our current Graduate Assistant can help you brainstorm how you could add these powerful learning tools into your classroom. They can also help find apps in your specific discipline to engage students. In some cases, with approval, CTE can purchase VR apps for use in your courses.

Users can then sit down and watch themselves present and if they are happy with the results they can publish their projected presence for the public to enjoy. Projected presence can also allow you to be in multiple places at once. If you want to provide live talk in more than one room at the same time your avatar can be beamed into multiple rooms to thousands of people giving the illusion that you attended each room personally to talk directly to the users within. *Echo Grotto (available on HTC Vive; Price: $7.99 or free with Viveport Subscription)

Echo Grotto is a virtual reality experience that lets you explore unique and intricate cave systems using a range of caving gear and tools! Traverse underwater tunnels, huge open caverns, crystal caves, massive ravines, sulfur pools, deep pits, glow-worm lit grottos and much more! Echo Grotto uses subtle random generation to make every cave system feel unique, while still delivering amazing locations and deeply interconnected caves since every cavern and passage is handmade and uniquely designed. Each time you embark down into the caves of Echo Grotto you will never know what’s around the corner!

Before you descend into a new cave system you can choose what gear you want to take with you. You might choose another locomotion method (like a grappling hook) or maybe an additional light source like a headlamp or lantern. Maybe you would rather take a snorkel with you so that you can reach the underwater portions of the caves? Or maybe a flare gun to easily light up things in the distance. There are many different tools to choose from!

You can explore the caves using a unique teleportation system, where you throw a small ‘teleporter lamp’ and you will be teleported to where it lands. This lamp will leave a trail of previous lamps behind you, resulting in a trail of lights that leads you back the way you came! Much like how cavers would leave a string behind them as they go, your teleporters leave a wire and trail of lights for you to retrace your steps. Another locomotion option is a pair of caving hooks, which you can use to freely "grab and move" yourself around the environment!

Choose to play as either an 'experience' or a 'game'. Choosing 'experience' will allow you to pick whatever gear you want from the start and simply explore the caves as you wish, while choosing 'game' will include a progression system, where you start with only basic tools and must search for more within the caves. It also employs a simple currency system, where you can use various gemstones found within the caves to get better tools!

You can also play a range of special ‘scenarios’ which alter the gameplay in unique ways. For example, you can explore a flooded cave system, start the game from an alternative entrance or play with nothing but glowsticks! Some scenarios are like special challenges, like starting the game already deep into a cave system with only a candle (which will run out over time!).

You will also find a range of cave-dwelling creatures in Echo Grotto. Keep an eye out for snails, eels and wetas! But if you’re not a fan of creepy-crawlies you can always set which animals can be found in the caves (or even none at all).

CrashCourse: Concussion Education Reimagined *EARLY ACCESS*

Website/App link: CrashCourse: Concussion Education Reimagined

About:

CrashCourse is concussion education reimagined for today's generation. This interactive 360 experience features star players from the Stanford football team, including All-American running back Bryce Love, along with Stanford Captains Alameen Murphy, JJ Arcega-Whiteside, Brandon Simmons, and wide-receiver Trenton Irwin. All materials were designed in partnership with leading subject matter experts and were evaluated using a rigorous research-based design process, which was conducted through Stanford University and formally approved by their Institutional Review Board.

The Problem

Millions of young people around the world are getting injured because they lack basic health education. More than 2.5 million young people suffer a concussion in the United States each year. With proper care, most concussions can heal within 10 days, but the overwhelming majority of students, parents, and coaches are unaware of the latest science about prevention and treatment of concussions. If not treated properly, a concussion may have lasting physical, emotional, and cognitive effects. Concussion education is critical for ensuring athletes can play their sport healthier, for longer.

Doctor Flow

Website/App Link: Doctor Flow

Price: $5.99

About:

Doctor Flow is a puzzle game of deduction and decision making. You assume the role of a doctor who decides which tests are performed on patients and in what order. Through its stylized interaction you are not only responsible for cost effective medical diagnoses, but also affect patient satisfaction and the quality of health care. Multiple solutions are possible, but only one is the most cost effective. Choose wisely!

  •  Play 40 challenging scenarios for hours of puzzle fun
  • Complete all 20 Steam achievements
  • Get the highest score and compete against other players in the online leaderboards
  • Developed in collaboration with medical specialists, educational experts and doctors in training
  • Choose from 3 themes: doctor, koi or alien
  • Feel like a doctor (well, sort of…)

Doctor Flow started out as a game for actual doctors to train their decision making. The process of taking tests and taking them in the right order makes for deep gameplay, and the immediate response was so positive that we made an extended version, with extra levels, music, visual themes, updated control scheme and polish throughout the game.

Doctor Flow was designed as part of a project to raise awareness of the cost associated with healthcare. For doctors in training the focus on the importance of conscious decision making is paramount. Not only for the costs, but also the patient's satisfaction. After research, the process of performing tests on patients and linking symptoms to diseases, stood out as the subject to base a game on. Being smart and conscious about choosing tests lowers costs and leads to higher patient satisfaction. Additionally, choosing the right strategy also gives an immediate sense of accomplishment. That's how Doctor Flow became a game about deduction, decisions and efficiency, one that clicked very well with its target audience, and one we like to offer players the world over.

DeathTolls Experience (Available on Vive; Price: Free)

With DeathTolls Experience, up-and-coming virtual reality artist Ali Eslami is seeking to resensitize the general public to the reality behind the abstract statistics on the hundreds of thousands of deaths in the Middle East. When news media bombard us with facts and figures every day, they gradually lose their emotional urgency. Eventually, our brains automatically filter out this dry “data reality,” even though it is crying out for our attention. The war in Syria is a good example. Eslami takes this psychological effect as the starting point for an investigation of how virtual reality can not only restore empathy, but also provide a context to news reports in which the numbers of victims can be counted but not comprehended. On the basis of a virtual journey through the history of European bloodbaths, an ocean filled with body bags containing recently drowned Syrian refugees, and casualties of the Syrian civil war, DeathTolls Experience immerses us in the meaning of these figures, opening up an emotional perspective on this suffering and terror.

Get those characters to direct you to look at landmarks to learn about the events of the day in 1915 Edmonton. Earn points when you look in the direction of the arrow that appears, pointing you towards the historical landmark.

This historically accurate first person POV game is fun for people in Edmonton who will recognize many of the buildings still here a century later, as well as entertaining for anyone interested to learn about this bustling and progressive frontier city. To earn 100% (26 conversation points and 6 landmark viewing points) one cannot help but learn a bit of city and era history. Can you get a perfect score? Play it again, until you do.Included in this purchase is a game with high replay value, that is divided up into 3 main levels of increasing difficulty. In the first level you are on the street where you have no time limit to learn how to operate the game before boarding the trolley, then in the second two levels as you ride the trolley you only have the length of the ride to talk to everyone and see everything before you arrive at the legislature building in downtown Edmonton. This VR game is intended to be played on your HTC Vive. Talk to the characters by getting close enough to them and then pressing the talk button on the hand held controller(s) if they have a voice cloud above their heads, and follow their instructions to look along at sites directed by the flashing arrow icons that appear.

Stanford Ocean Acidification Experience (Available on HTC Vive Pro; Price: Free)

Most people have never heard of ocean acidification—the process by which the ocean becomes more acidic as it absorbs carbon dioxide (CO2) that has been emitted into the atmosphere. Visualizing the impact to marine is challenging. As a solution, Stanford researchers have produced a virtual underwater ecosystem to allow you to observe firsthand what coral reefs are expected to look like by the end of the century if we do not curb our CO2 emissions. With funding from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, Stanford researchers have designed an educational experience that makes the impossible possible: watch the ocean absorb invisible CO2 molecules, a coral reef degrade and marine life disappear as the ocean acidifies. Each step in the journey is based on decades of marine science research.

Dissection Simulator: Frog Edition

Website/App Link: Dissection Simulator: Frog Edition

Available on: Oculus and VIVE

Price:  $11.99/Free with VIVEport subscription

About:

Join Wendy Martin, a national award-winning science teacher, to make Ribbit-ing Discoveries in this virtual reality Frog Dissection. Learn the fundamentals of the female frog anatomy in a fully immersive virtual reality experience.

Learning can take place anytime, anywhere

VictoryVR’s virtual reality frog dissection software is a hands-on dissection opportunity that users can experience through the power of virtual reality. This true to life experience covers each step that a student would take if they were dissecting a real frog in their classroom. Along the way, a hologram of our teacher - national runner-up Teacher of the Year, Wendy Martin - will pop up to provide instruction and information to users.

An Authentic Science Experience Aligned to National Learning Standards

All of the instruction follows the Next Generations Science Standards (NGSS), the national science standards for the United States. The dissection experience is recreated to the finest detail so that they are a suitable substitute for the real thing in a classroom. Lifelike physical models mean that the frog appears as it would in a real dissection allowing science teachers to feel good about substituting virtual reality for the real thing.

Schools can save on the expensive annual costs of animal acquisition without causing harm to a single creature by using dissections in virtual reality. Over a 5-year period, a single classroom will spend over $4000 just to dissect frogs. Furthermore, these dissections can only take place once a year and cannot be “redone” if a student makes a mistake.

Dissections in VR are a safe alternative

As teachers and parents know, dissections can present a risk to student safety due to: risk of being cut by a scalpel, risk of infection, and exposure to formaldehyde - which can damage the eyes, cause asthma attacks, and bronchitis.

LUX SINE

Price: Free

Available on: Steam

About:

Set in the Black Hills of South Dakota, this interactive VR documentary takes participants into the subterranean depths of Sanford Research Lab and Wind Cave as they unravel the cosmos from different angles.

Participants are invited to navigate the former Homestake Goldmine turned cutting-edge laboratory 4,850 feet below ground, where scientists employ a cosmic microphone to investigate the nature of dark matter. In tandem, the story also takes participants into the vast underground network of Wind Cave, the labyrinth of ancient passageways at the heart of the Lakota Sioux creation story. Both spaces transport us into a realm of sheer darkness as they explore what lies beyond light.

Using volumetric video capture technologies that see beyond the spectrum of visible lights, this immersive documentary crafts a dialogue between the scientific frontier and a realm of spiritual belief that co-exist in the storied Black Hills. As the diptych emerges in this interactive narrative, visitors to the underground are turned inwards to find their common ground.

*Becoming Homeless (Available on HTC Vive Pro; Price: Free)

The Fundamental Attribution Error, as coined by a Stanford Psychology Professor, describes how we blame others when bad things happen to them, but blame the external situations when bad things happen to us. There is a misconception that losing one's home is due to who you are and the choices you make. Becoming Homeless: A Human Experience seeks to counter this belief. In this immersive virtual reality experience from Stanford University’s Virtual Human Interaction Lab, spend days in the life of someone who can no longer afford a home. Interact with your environment to attempt to save your home and to protect yourself and your belongings as you walk in another’s shoes and face the adversity of living with diminishing resources. Researchers from Stanford have run thousands of participants through this experience in an effort to study the effect of VR experiences on empathy. Across our studies, we demonstrate that the VR experience changes helping behavior more than other types of perspective taking exercises, and the effect lasts months after the experience. While this 7-minute journey does not come close to immense burden of living without a home, researchers continue to find the VR experiences can be a powerful tool to help put oneself in the shoes of another.

Sense the scale of the structure and take in the atmosphere of the surrounding landscape. Developed by a team of two, Buzludzha VR aims to provide a unique location-based experience that both educates and entertains, and is accessible to both VR veterans and VR newcomers.

Buz-what? booz-woo-jah [bu:zwu:dʒɑ:]

Situated on top of a mountain over 1400 meters above sea level, the Buzludzha monument is like something out of a science fiction movie. This UFO-shaped structure was built in the 1970s to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the founding of Bulgaria's Social Democratic party. After 7 difficult years of construction, the monument was officially opened to the public in August 1981. For the next 8 years, it was used as the headquarters of the communist party. However, in November 1989 Bulgaria ceased to be a Communist State and the building was promptly closed down. After years of disuse and with no further maintenance, the abandoned structure began to quickly deteriorate and suffer from acts of vandalism.

Thanks to the building’s unusual design and unique location, it did not take long for Buzludzha to become one of Europe’s most iconic abandoned sites. It continuously attracts urban explorers from all around the world.
