CTE is hosting a workshop series focused on exploring the key aspects of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and its practical applications. Participants can attend individual sessions or join the entire series for a comprehensive learning experience. These workshops complement the topics covered in the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in Practice short course.
Session topics will include:
- Integrating UDL principles into your course design
- Adopting a trauma-informed approach to UDL implementation
- Expanding UDL strategies beyond learning materials to enhance assessment practices
UDL Principles in Design Practice
Thursday, February 20, 1:15 - 2:30pm, Webinar
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a widely recognized, research-supported framework for creating inclusive learning materials and curricula. It focuses on proactively addressing learners' diverse needs by prioritizing accessibility through three main principles: engagement, representation, and action and expression. In this workshop, we will briefly review the core principles of UDL and then showcase how these principles are applied in real-world settings. Participants will have the opportunity to analyze and revise sample learning materials, using UDL strategies to enhance accessibility and effectiveness.
Learning Outcomes
- Identify the major guidelines for Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
- Discuss best practices for using UDL in curriculum development
Trauma-Informed Practice and the Ethics of Care
Monday, March 31, 1:15 - 2:30pm, In-Person
Each major principle of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) emphasizes learner agency, which relies on a sense of identity and psychological safety. In this workshop, we will explore how instructors can incorporate trauma-informed strategies into their instructional and curricular design to create more inclusive learning environments. Participants will engage with case studies and scenarios, as well as reflect on their own approaches to curriculum design.
Learning Outcomes
- Develop curriculum materials that consider learners’ histories and experiences.
- Identify ways to incorporate trauma-informed language in their teaching philosophies.
Universally Designed Assessments
Tuesday, April 22, 1:15 - 2:30pm, In-Person
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a proactive approach to making course materials more accessible, but its principles can also enhance how students express their understanding of course content. In this workshop, we will explore strategies for engaging with students who may approach assessments in unexpected ways and how to design more inclusive assessments that allow for diverse demonstrations of learning. We will also focus on designing assessments efficiently, prioritizing student agency while minimizing instructor burnout.
Learning Outcomes
- Design assessments differentiated for learners’ success.
- Develop materials that prioritize learners’ agency and choice.
