The University of South Carolina’s First-Generation Symposium is an annual celebration of the experiences, successes, and unique needs of first-generation college students. This collaborative event is supported by the Center for Teaching Excellence, First-Generation Center, TRIO Programs, Graduation and Retention Network (GARNET), the Office of Access and Opportunity, and the Division of Student Affairs and Academic Support. Keynote Presentation
Keynote Speaker
Kick off the symposium with Sonja Ardoin, PhD, an expert in college access and success for rural and first-generation college students. She is an Associate Professor in the Higher Education and Student Affairs programs at Clemson University. Ardoin is a nationally recognized scholar–practitioner whose two decades of teaching, research, and leadership in higher education have advanced understanding of social class, rurality, and first-generation student experiences. She has over 65 academic publications, including seven books, and her work consistently bridges rigorous scholarship with practitioner relevance. Her research has shaped national conversations about first-generation college student success, while her sustained administrative and faculty leadership underscores her commitment to equity-centered educational practice.
Keynote Abstract
Supporting First-Generation College Students through Your Sphere(s) of Influence
First-generation college students are multifaceted individuals who both face systemic barriers to higher education access and completion and possess many assets that support their success. When we admit first-generation college students to our campuses, we must be prepared to create environments that support and validate their experiences. This session will invite participants to examine their sphere(s) of influence and identify ways they can actively champion first-generation college student succes
This keynote is relevant to all educators at USC, including faculty, staff, and administrators.

The First-Generation Symposium Working Group invites all attendees to bring a non-perishable item to donate to the Gamecock CommUnity Shop, the on-campus pantry supporting food security for those on campus in need.
