Under the direction of the state archaeologist, we support South Carolina communities through several key activities.
- We advise the State Historic Preservation Office, other public agencies and private individuals on archaeological site protection, preservation, conservation and compliance-related activities.
- We provide expertise to the legislature
- We field a forensic archaeology recovery team to assist law enforcement and allied agencies.
- We receive and manage forms, reports, and archaeological collections.
- We coordinate burial preservation.
- We serve as the state's liaison to Native American tribal groups.
- We support the advancement of archaeology within the state, region, and nation.
ArchSite
South Carolina's ArchSite, an online GIS for archaeological and architectural resource management, is offered in conjunction with the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, the USC Department of Geography, and the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
Avocational Site Database
The South Carolina Avocational Site Database (SCASD) is a resource available to and designed for avocational archaeologists.
This program uses a simplified avocational site form. We provide two manuals to assist users. The first manual takes the user step by step through the avocational site form. The second one clarifies the use of Google Earth for mapping. Sites reported to the SCASD are not automatically a part of the official state site form database. They may become part of the state system at a later point once additional work is undertaken through the professional system.
