Projects and Publications

The Maritime Research Division is responsible for all submerged cultural heritage belonging to the state of South Carolina. There are a variety of projects and publications relating to this submerged cultural heritage that range from shipwrecks to prehistoric sites. The MRD has also been involved in a number of collaborative projects both in South Carolina and far outside its borders.

Shipwrecks

The Maritime Research Division has many past and present projects involving a variety of shipwreck sites.

Site Investigations

Occasionally, the MRD has the opportunity to survey and record specific sites of historical significance.

Regional Surveys

Widespread regional surveys help underwater archaeologists to better understand individual sites on a broader scale through time.

Historic Live Oaks

The MRD worked with the SC Department of Transportation to remove live oaks destined for removal in the path of a highway project and provide them to New England shipwrights for use in restoration and replicas of historic vessels.

Special Projects

The MRD has worked on a variety of collaborative projects within SCIAA as well as many other organizations in and outside of SC.
