RUSSIAN PROGRAM COURSES, Summer/Fall 2024

 

SUMMER 2024:

Fulfill your language requirement in one summer with RUSS 121-122, taught online asynchronously! RUSS 121, First-semester Russian (no prerequisites), Summer session 3S1; RUSS 122, Second-semester Russian, Summer session 3S2.

FALL 2024 LANGUAGE COURSES:

Four levels of Russian language, from beginning to advanced: Russian 121, Russian 201, Russian 301, Russian 401 (for placement contact Dr. Kalb, kalbj@mailbox.sc.edu).  Honors section available for 121! One online asynchronous section!
 
RUSS 398: RUSSIAN CONVERSATION
Mrs. Eaton MWF 9:40  
 Focus on development of conversational Russian skills. The course is designed to help students develop further speaking and listening skills in Russian by expanding vocabulary and mastering already known and new grammatical constructions through intensive practice.
Prerequisite: RUSS 202.  Requirements satisfied: Humanities.  Counts for Russian minor and major credit.


FALL 2024 CULTURE COURSES:

RUSSIAN 280: INTRODUCTION TO RUSSIAN CIVILIZATION
MWF 10:50
This course offers an introduction to the rich and complex culture of Russia, the world's largest country.  Topics for class meetings and assignments are deliberately interdisciplinary.  They range from medieval Russian art to twentieth-century Socialist Realism, from the music of Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky to folk songs and the ballads of the 1970s, from the poetry of Pushkin and the soul-searching of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky to works by contemporary, post-Soviet writers. 
Prerequisites: None.  All readings in English. Satisfies requirements in AIU, General Humanities. COUNTS FOR RUSS MINOR CREDIT AND AS A PREREQUISITE FOR THE RUSS MAJOR!
 
RUSSIAN 320: TWENTIETH-CENTURY RUSSIAN LITERATURE IN TRANSLATION 
Dr. Kalb MW 2:20-3:35

From revolutions and communism to gulags, glasnost, and beyond, modern Russian history has been marked by a series of explosions. This course examines the major upheavals of twentieth-century Russia through a spectacular literary prism.  Authors under discussion include Chekhov, Nabokov, Bulgakov, and Solzhenitsyn.

Prerequisites: None.  All readings in English.   Satisfies requirements in General AIU for College of Arts and Sciences, GLD: Global Learning and INT Integrative.   Honors section available!

COUNTS FOR RUSSIAN MINOR OR MAJOR CREDIT!!!

Note: All Russian majors must take RUSS 319 or RUSS 320, offered alternately every fall.
 
RUSS 320L: TWENTIETH-CENTURY RUSSIAN LITERATURE IN RUSSIAN (1 credit)
(time TBA) Come practice your Russian as you discuss some great works of literature in Russian!

Prerequisite: RUSS 202 or equivalent. COUNTS FOR RUSSIAN MINOR OR MAJOR CREDIT!!!
 

RUSSIAN 598: RUSSIAN FOOD AND FOODWAYS
Dr. Kisselev T Th 11:40-12:55

This course explores Russian cuisine and the intricate connection of culinary traditions to the history, politics, and cultures of the vast region that encompasses Slavic, Eurasian, and many indigenous cultures. We will examine Russian food and foodways through the lens of classical and contemporary literature, popular culture, film, oral histories, cookbooks, and other media.

Prerequisites: None.  All readings in English.   Satisfies requirements in General Humanities for College of Arts and Sciences. Available for undergraduate and graduate credit. Honors section available!
