Teaching Logistics
The Academic Calendar can be found online through the Office of the University Registrar. Final exam schedules are also posted on the Office of the Registrar website. You should include the official final exam date in your syllabus.
Classroom instruction for a three-credit course is normally 150 minutes a week for 14 weeks. Classes meeting one day per week must be scheduled for 165 minutes to include a 15-minute break. View the Standard Class Meeting Times for additional information.
Access information regarding the Summer Meeting Times. View the summer schedule including dates and deadlines, holidays, and the final exam schedule.
Because of planned renovations to Russell House, course materials have been relocated to the first floor of the Byrnes building (901 Sumter St.), which will become the primary destination for all academic-related materials, including textbooks, iClickers and more.
Because of the limited retail space, students must place all textbook and other materials orders online on the USC Bookstore’s website.
- Once orders are placed online, students can choose to pick up their materials in-store or have them delivered.
- If you choose in-store pickup, you will receive an email with a specific pickup date for the order.
The USC-Columbia Faculty Manual identifies the syllabus as the most important instrument of structure in a course. The syllabus defines what students will learn, how learning will occur, and how it will be evaluated, establishing both standards and tone for the class. Additional guidelines for course syllabi are outlined in Academic Affairs Policy ACAF 2.03, Section III.E.
Recognizing that syllabus statements are key to communicating expectations, the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) offers Example Syllabus Statements aligned with university policies. Topics include academic integrity, attendance, academic and student support, classroom behavior, assignment submission, disability accommodation, final exams, study habits, instructional methods, and instructor expectations.
The CTE also provides Syllabus and Course Templates to help you prepare for upcoming semesters.
