Introduction to Grant Writing

This comprehensive hands-on session will cover everything from grant terminology to developing a sound proposal. You will receive the essentials to grant seeking and grant writing strategies and skills required to submit foundation, state and federal grant applications for funding. You will write a letter of intent, compile a simple budget and have it reviewed by your peers.

Needs Based Assessment and Research

Needs assessment is a necessary tool for program development, evaluation, and essential for the grant writing process. We will examine the necessary components of a successful needs assessment such as organizational capacity, availability of resources, research and statistics, unmet needs, and community partners. You will learn both practical and conceptual aspects that are important to the development process. Emphasis is given to research and relevant statistics.

Program Development and Evaluation

Poor program development is the major reason organizations fail to gain or lose funding. We will examine the necessary components of a successful program such as a highly integrated, ongoing set of activities, resource planning, goals and objectives, organizational capacity, community partners and outcomes and evaluation. You will learn both practical and conceptual aspects that are important to the development process. Emphasis is given to outcome based measures and evaluation. Topics will include unmet need identification and best practices. 

The Grant Writing Process

The basis for successful grant writing is a carefully designed program. In this intensive session, we will examine the necessary components of a successful grant proposal such as the problem statement, project design, goals and objectives, organizational capacity, community partners and outcomes and evaluation. You will learn both practical and conceptual aspects that are important to the proposal-writing process. Emphasis is given to idea development, identification of the appropriate granting agency, how to write for reviewers, and tips and strategies of proven value in presenting an applicant’s case to reviewers. Topics will include operational and capital campaign strategies, overview of planned giving structures, review of available funding sources and the preparation of a grant proposal.
