Online Contest

South Carolina Academy of Science Online Contest / Center for Science Education at USC

This contest challenges students with fun math and science questions. All schools that have a grade 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 can participate.
In 2024, we will publish the online contest and email it to all schools in South Carolina in January of 2024. The online contest must be completed on or before Monday March 11, 2024.

There are two online contests:

E contest for grades 4 – 6
M Contest for grades 6 – 8.
(A sixth grader can enter E or M but not both.)

Each school that participates will have at least one winner, and each student that enters the contest will be recognized with a participation certificate given by their sponsoring school.

After the contest deadline, we will select winners in the four categories: School, Region, State, and Grand and produce Honors Certificates for each student winner. We will mail the Honors Certificates to the principal of the school to present to the winning student at a school assembly.

Winners will be announced on the Center for Science Education website & SCAS website. In addition, results will be published in the South Carolina Academy of Science Newsletter in the May/June/July issue.

2023 Winners Announced

Sponsored by the South Carolina Academy of Science & Center for Science Education at USC

TOTAL NUMBER OF ENTRIES: Two Hundred & Forty-Seven (247)

The State-wide SC Academy of Science On-Line Contest was available in early January 2023 and was online until Monday, March 6, 2023. There were two hundred and forty-seven (247) entries, with one hundred and forty-six (146) students from grades 4-6 (E Contest) and one hundred and one (101) students from grades 6-8 (M Contest). This year, the contests enclosed a broad range of topics emphasizing biology, outer layers of the Earth`s atmosphere, barcodes and measurement and some fun questions. In 2023 students were asked sixty multiple-choice questions. Some of the questions required hands-on activities to complete. All follow the Common Core Guidelines of South Carolina. We want to extend our most sincere appreciation to the creators of the 2023 South Carolina Academy of Science (SCAS) online contest. These members from the South Carolina Academy of Science and faculty from the Center for Science Education at USC played major roles in the production of the 2023 contest. Special thanks to Daniel Gregory, USC Engineering Student with skills in an online contest.

Awards were given in four categories: Grand, State, Regional, and School. A unique feature of the contest is that every school participating is guaranteed at least one winner. The Grand Award was shared with thirty-eight (38) students, with twenty students from the E contest (Grades 4 – 6) and eighteen (18) students from the M Contest (grades 6 – 8) from seven science fair regions in South Carolina. The winners of the 2023 E contest Grades 6 – 8 and 2023 M Contest Grades 6 – 8 are listed below:

The contest scores were exceptionally good overall, and some entrants qualified for an award. We had two hundred and one (201) winners out of a total of two hundred and forth-six (246) participants (approx. 81.7% of the total number of participants were winners). Certificates and prizes will be mailed to each student’s principal so that the awards can be presented at each school’s Awards Assembly. We congratulate every contestant for his or her excellent effort! We encourage every student in all South Carolina schools to participate next year. Below is a list of the winners and their schools. Followed by a list of Teachers and/or Sponsors that participated. Hats off to our teachers in South Carolina.
