- You’re the president of USWSA. Can you tell us more about the organization and what it does?
USWSA is a student-led organization that encourages students from all areas of interest to connect with one another, engage with the community of Columbia and emphasizes the need for social justice and diversity. In simple terms, we want a safe and engaging space for students to network on a personal and professional basis.
- How does USWSA help students connect with other social work students and faculty?
We offer several events throughout the school year that cater to the interests of each of our members. We like to engage students to spend time with one another outside of a classroom setting, which has led to some of the best friendships. The COSW faculty has been integral to our success and we love their participation in our events!
- What’s one surprising thing you’ve learned through your involvement with USWSA?
I love learning about all of the different professional goals my peers have - we all
share the common goal of helping others, but the way that we all are choosing to do
so is different. I have yet to meet any two students who want to do the exact same
thing, which is so incredible.
- If you could plan any event for USWSA, what would it be?
Last year, we planned a pajama/movie night in the Hamilton basement, complete with a popcorn machine and boxed candy. I would love to do that again this year!
- How does USWSA support your professional goals in social work?
My leadership skills have developed astronomically since joining USWSA. I feel more confident in myself and my classes, especially since the organization has allowed me to get to know my peers outside of lectures. It’s really important to work with faculty and community partners to achieve our goals, so I feel as though I can credit that to USWSA.
5.5 Our faculty and staff love the painted rocks from USWSA outside of Hamilton. Could we talk you into more of those?
Absolutely! It was so much fun doing so last year, we hope to have a rock for each faculty/staff member and student this year!
