Popa Mabe Promoted to Associate Professor

The College of Social Work is pleased to announce the promotion of Melania Popa-Mabe to Associate Professor. Her advancement comes as a recognition of her significant contributions to the field of social work education and research. 

Popa-Mabe has been an integral part of the college faculty since her appointment in 2018 as an assistant professor. She began at COSW as an adjunct instructor and currently plays a crucial role in the undergraduate program with expertise in social policy. She leads courses including Social Welfare Institutions, Policies and Programs, Social Policy Analysis and Advocacy for Social and Economic Justice. 

Popa’s area of expertise lies in international social work, shaped by her research and work experience in international child adoption. She earned her bachelor's degrees in social work and sociology from Babes-Bolyai University in Romania, followed by a master's degree in human resources management. Her doctorate was obtained from Bryn Mawr College, Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research.

"Her commitment to innovative teaching and her contribution to student growth make her a deserving candidate for the title of Associate Professor." 

Popa-Mabe’s promotion was approved during the University of South Carolina’s June Board of Trustees meeting. She holds a teaching certificate in online learning from USC’s Center for Teaching Excellence and serves as a senior community counselor for the Au Pair in America International Exchange Program.
