More about the J-1 Student Intern Program
The J-1 Student Intern program facilitates temporary, full-time internship opportunities
for international students who are currently enrolled in and pursuing a degree at
a post-secondary institution abroad and who are invited to do an internship on campus
with a USC faculty supervisor. The internship must fulfill educational objectives
for the individual’s current degree program at their current institution abroad.
In general, student interns do not take courses and do not receive university course
credit from USC, so there are no tuition charges. The ISSS Office is not a placement
agency: departments and student interns are responsible for coordinating internships
and intern duties.
J-1 Student Intern Stipulations
- Internship can last between 2-12 months
- Internship can begin and end at any time, but complete applications must be submitted
to ISSS no less than 90 days in advance of the proposed internship start date
- Internship can be paid or unpaid. If the internship is paid, it must meet other institutional
wage requirements.
- J-1 Student Intern must work on-campus and must be an official affiliate or on USC
payroll
