Discover UofSC is an event sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research that showcases research, scholarship, leadership and creative projects by undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and medical scholars representing the entire UofSC System. It came back in person on Friday April 22nd for the first time since 2019 and welcomed about 850 presentations and more than 2,000 attendees. Congrats to our undergraduate students who won multiple awards that day!
- Savannah Bowers, who is completing majors in Biological Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies, won 2nd place for her oral presentation on "Immunofluorescent Optimization: a framework for investigation into WWP1 regulation of ECM turnover during embryonic heart development". Savannah is working under the mentorship of Dr. Lydia Matesic.
- Jeremy Money, who is majoring in Chemical Engineering, and Mary McElveen, who is completing a Baccalaureus Artium et Scientiae, won 1st place for their poster presentation on "Exploring the effects of reduced Fig4 expression on axonal transport and mitochondrial function". They are both mentored by Dr. Jeff Twiss and his graduate student Ms. Irene Dalla Costa.
- Graham McLaughlin, who is a senior in Biological Sciences working in the lab of Dr. Brian Hollis, won 2nd place for his poster presentation on "Experimental Reinforcement Using Laboratory Island Populations of Drosophila melanogaster".
- Megan Glover, who is completing a major in Biological Sciences and a minor in Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior, won 2nd place for her poster presentation on "Assessing the Effects of High-Fat Diets on Adipose tissue and Immune Response". Megan is working under the supervision of Dr. Alissa Armstrong.
- Anna Bazell, who is completing a major in Biological Sciences and a minor in Criminal Justice, won 1st place for her poster presentation on "Functional Analysis of STN1 Winged Helix (wH) Domains". Anna is mentored by Dr. Jason Stewart and his graduate student Mr. Logan Schuck.
- Kirsten Fisher, who is a senior in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology working in the lab of Dr. Johannes Stratmann, won 1st place for her poster presentation on "Signaling Responses of Tomato Plants and Cells to the Green Leaf Volatile cis-3-hexenol".
- Rachel Maile, who is completing a major in Biological Sciences and a minor in Spanish, won 2nd place for her poster presentation on "The Successes and Pitfalls: Deep Learning Effectiveness in a Chernobyl Field Camera Trap Application". Rachel works under the supervision of Dr. Tim Mousseau.
- Dylan Davis, who is a senior in Biological Sciences working in the lab of Dr. Jeff Dudycha, won 2nd place for his poster presentation on "Exploring the Plasticity of Mixotrophy: Responses of Cryptomonas ovata to glucose addition along a light gradient". Dylan is mentored by Dr. Jeff Dudycha and his graduate student Ms. Rachel Schomaker.
- Alannah DiCintio, Madeline Ries, and Andrew Gasperson, who are seniors in Biological Sciences working in the lab of Dr. Alan Wladman won 2nd place for their poster presentation on "The Influence of Progerin on DNA End-Joining".
- Lydia Ebel and Ibrahim Hasnie, who are completing a major in Biological Sciences, won 2nd place for their poster presentation on "The Role of Early Exposure Antibiotics on the Risk of Developing Early Onset Colorectal Cancer". They are both mentored by Dr. Marj Pena.
- Kaitlyn Dirr, who is completing a major in Biological Sciences and a minor in Marine Science, won 2nd place for her poster presentation on the "Seasonal Use of Gopher Tortoise Burrows in Coastal Beach Dunes". Kaitlyn is mentored by Dr. Josh Stone and Dr. Matthew E. Kimball (Baruch Marine Field Laboratory).
- Dorathea Lee, who is completing a major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, won 1st place for her poster presentation on "Less Gatekeeping, More Girlbosses: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in STEM Higher Education". She is mentored by Dr. Charles Andy Schumpert.
