USC Unveils Roadmap for AI Application in Research and Scholarship

The University of South Carolina has released a comprehensive AI Roadmap aimed at transforming the institution into a leader in AI research and application. The plan includes initiatives to enhance faculty grant-writing through AI-powered tools, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and improve productivity. Key goals include securing federal grants, creating centralized research databases and leveraging AI to address critical challenges facing the Palmetto State. This strategic effort is set to drive innovation and technological advancement, positioning USC at the forefront of AI research excellence. Check out the USC AI Roadmap.

 

Excel Funding for Faculty: Application Deadline Extended

Due to the impacts of Hurricane Helene, the deadline for 2025 Excel applications has been extended to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22, 2024. Click here to view the updated application guidelines and program overview.

Excel grants support faculty scholarship and creative output in the liberal arts, humanities and social sciences. Funds can be used in a variety of ways depending on the project. Coverage for travel, graduate student salary, project supplies, and publication costs are among the allowed uses for this funding package. 2nd Annual Graduate Student Data Visualization Competition

The University Libraries is once again sponsoring the Graduate Student Data Visualization Award during the 2024-2025 academic year. This competition is designed to:

  • Highlight research by current University of South Carolina graduate students.
  • Celebrate excellence using data visualization to encourage and enhance knowledge explanation and comprehension.
  • Promote data literacy and effective data visualization creation and presentation.
  • Encourage awareness of data literacy services and resources provided by the University Libraries.

The Graduate Student Data Visualization Award offers USC graduate students the opportunity to show off their skills using data visualization in their research. Submissions will be accepted any time between Monday, October 7, 2024 and Friday, January 3, 2025. A first-place award up to $1000 is possible with second and third place awards also possible. Savannah River National Laboratory University Partnerships Day features keynote by Dr. Tom Mullikin 

The National Laboratories Office is proud to present the USC community with the first National Laboratory University Partnerships Day. Dr. Tom Mullikin will be giving a keynote address on South Carolina conservation and SRNL researchers will present their work. Dr. Mullikin is an active advocate for global environmental conservation and is currently the chair of South Carolina Floodwater Commission. Come prepared to network and learn alongside scholars from a variety of disciplines and career backgrounds. The event will take place on Thursday, October 24, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Russell House Ballroom. Click here to view the updated schedule for this event and register to attend.

 

Become a Reviewer for Internal Funding and Awards Programs

The Office of the Vice President for Research offers a comprehensive slate of internal funding and award programs for faculty, students and postdoctoral scholars. These annual programs provide recognition of outstanding work and unique opportunities for researchers at every level to take on scholarly projects that might be hard to fund through other methods. To keep these programs strong and successful, the Office of the Vice President for Research looks to faculty members throughout the USC System to serve as reviewers on the committees that guide selection of award and/or funding recipients. Interested faculty members are encouraged to sign up to serve on a review committee.

 

Application Deadline Extended: Magellan Scholar undergraduate research grant program

Due to the impacts of Hurricane Helene, the Magellan Scholar application deadline has been extended for students across the USC System. The new application deadlines vary by campus, so please plan accordingly:

  • Wednesday, October 16 by 5:00 p.m.: Columbia, Beaufort, Lancaster, Salkehatchie and Sumter campuses
  • Wednesday, October 23 by 5:00 p.m.: Aiken, Upstate and Union campuses

For the Magellan Mini-Grant program, the original deadline of Tuesday, October 22, by 5:00 p.m., is unchanged; the same is true for several other undergraduate funding programs connected to Living-Learning Communities. Please email our@sc.edu with any questions.
