The Office of the Vice President for Research is proud to unveil a new set of tools devised to help our research community gain a better understanding of the university’s sponsored awards and research expenditures by sharing the latest data through interactive visualizations including charts, graphs and color-coded tables. The new USC Research Dashboards were developed in partnership with the Office of Institutional Research, Assessment and Analytics using Tableau data visualization software.
We had a great experience working with the data visualization experts in the Office of Institutional Research, Assessment and Analytics to make this vision into a reality.
— Julius Fridriksson, USC Vice President for Research
The two new Research Dashboards, launched today on the Office of the Vice President for Research website, offer a variety of visualizations on two key indicators of research success, sponsored awards garnered by USC researchers and expenditures made by the university in the pursuit of research. The Sponsored Awards Dashboard is updated monthly to display the latest on incoming grants and other sponsored awards received by researchers throughout the USC system. The Research Expenditures Dashboard is updated each year with data on USC’s research expenditures gathered for the annual NSF Higher Education Research and Development Survey, including both federal and non-federal expenditures.
“The Office of the Vice President for Research has always offered clear and helpful data on USC’s research enterprise through our Office of IT and Data Management, and we see this as an enhancement to that important function,” said USC Vice President for Research Julius Fridriksson. “We had a great experience working with the data visualization experts in the Office of Institutional Research, Assessment and Analytics to make this vision into a reality. I would like to thank Jonathan Poon from that office for leading the effort to develop this elegant and impactful visualization tool that is sure to help our colleagues across the USC system gain a better understanding of our research successes and opportunities. This effort would not have been possible without strong support from our IT and Data Management Office, led by Debbie Kassianos, so I want to extend my thanks to them, as well. We are all so proud to share these new tools with the USC research community.”
