Inside Higher Ed: Survey findings show COVID-19’s impact on academic research

NORC, a research institute at the University of Chicago, released the results of a survey of 208 senior officers from science master’s and Ph.D. programs on the impact of COVID-19 on operations. Findings suggest that while science has been severely disrupted due to the pandemic, some aspects of COVID-19-era instruction and operations are here to stay. Some 82 percent of institutions represented anticipated expanding the number of graduate programs offered in a hybrid format, for instance. Read more.

 

University Libraries offers a variety research and data virtual workshops this spring

  • SHARPGrads: The Skills, Habits, and Research Program for Graduate Students at the University of South Carolina, or SHARPGrads, is a workshop series for UofSC Columbia graduate students sponsored by University Libraries and the Graduate School. Graduate students who complete the program earn a certificate of achievement.
  • Love Data Week: Next week, February 8-12, University Libraries will host Love Data Week, a week full of learning opportunities around data-related skills and concepts. Love Data Week is an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to explore data concepts and skills, and to learn about the people on campus who can help you with data-related issues.

 

Reminder: Encourage students to apply for a Magellan Scholar by Feb. 17

The Magellan Scholar undergraduate research award is open to undergraduates, all campuses, and all disciplines. Magellan Scholars receive up to $3,000 to help fund a faculty mentored research project, competing for this award with the submission of a research, scholarship or creative project proposal. Students are required to review an application video series before preparing the project description. For more information and to register for access to the video series, please see the Magellan Scholar webpage. Magellan proposals are due by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 17.
