The Office of the Vice President for Research is introducing a new research award for faculty members throughout the university system who consistently serve as reviewers for our internal funding and awards programs for faculty and student researchers, demonstrating exceptional commitment to the USC research community. This new award, the Distinguished Research Service Award, was conceived by the Vice President for Research and a committee of Office of Research internal funding and awards program managers who have come to rely on these committed reviewers who volunteer their time and expertise to evaluate proposals for the programs they oversee.
Reviewers are the backbone of the internal funding programs offered by the Office of the Vice President for Research. Each year, the office receives more than 600 applications for the various programs, all of which must be evaluated by a committee of faculty reviewers. The Office also coordinates reviewers for about 1,000 Discover USC presentations each year, working with partners across campus and at the School of Medicine.
“Over the last several years, my office has created numerous new internal funding opportunities to enhance research at all levels and all campuses in the USC System. These highly successful programs have led to securing new research funding and enhancing research publications and scholarly activities,” Vice President for Research, Prakash Nagarkatti, explained. “The success of these programs would not have been possible without the dedication of the faculty members who serve on the review committees.”
From supporting the most innovative ideas and providing unbiased reviews and constructive feedback to all applicants, the research service provided by our 2018 Distinguished Research Service Award recipients exceeds expectations. Their willingness to devote the significant time and effort required to serve on review panels, on numerous occasions, is worthy of recognition and celebration by their colleagues, students and the entire USC research community.
