Mechanical engineering professor Travis Knight earned one of only five Department
of Energy Integrated Research Project awards nationally for a total of $4 million
dollars. Knight, along with his internal and external collaborators from the University
of Florida, South Carolina State University and private industry, will use these funds
to validate current procedures for storing used nuclear fuel and investigate advanced
methods for handling and storing used fuel. This research is especially important
to industry in South Carolina, a state that is home to several nuclear reactors and
that meets around 50 percent of its energy needs with nuclear power.
