College of Social Work faculty member Bongki Woo has been promoted to Associate Professor in recognition of his significant contributions to research and the advancement of social work practice. Woo joined the college faculty in 2018 and has emerged as a leader in exploring the health and mental health impacts of inequality as they affect racial, ethnic and immigrant minority communities.
Woo’s research sheds light on how social stressors, particularly racial discrimination, contribute to disparities in mental health outcomes across racial and ethnic groups. His scholarship, which includes studies on anti-racism and neighborhood environments, has been published in numerous prominent academic journals including the Journal of Immigrant and Minority Health, the Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology and the Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities.
“Bongki Woo’s promotion to associate professor reflects his exceptional commitment to research that confronts the social and health inequities affecting diverse communities," said Dean Teri Browne. "His work not only deepens the understanding of a complex relationship between discrimination and mental health but also embodies the College of Social Work’s mission to champion positive change for all. We are excited to support Dr. Woo’s continued contributions to the field and to our college.”
Woo earned his Ph.D. from Boston College School of Social Work and holds a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Pittsburgh. His academic career reflects a commitment to understanding and addressing the structural barriers that impact marginalized populations.
“I feel grateful for the promotion,” said Woo. “I am truly honored and thrilled to be able to continue my work on social determinants of minority health.”
