USC Dance Company

Founded in 1976, the USC Dance Company has grown to become a renowned performance dance ensemble that presents ballet, modern and jazz works, as well as innovative dance concerts and contemporary works.

Our Performances

Our varied repertoire includes works ranging from the treasured classical ballets of Marius Petipa and George Balanchine to the modern work of Twyla Tharp, Lynne Taylor-Corbett, Lila York and Kevin O'Day.

Past Performances include:

  • "Stars and Stripes" by George Balanchine
  • "Mozartiana" by George Balanchine
  • "Western Symphony" by George Balanchine
  • "Deuce Coupe" by Twyla Tharp
  • "Eight Jelly Rolls" by Twyla Tharp
  • "Great Galloping Gottschalk" by Lynne Taylor-Corbett
  • "Viola Alone" by Kevin O'Day
  • "Diversion of Angels" by Martha Graham
  • "Steps in the Street" by Martha Graham
  • "Tensile Involvement" by Alwin Nikolais

Ballet Stars of New York

A highlight of our annual performance season is our "Ballet Stars of New York" concert, which features principal dancers from the New York City Ballet performing alongside our student company. Past guests include such luminaries as Wendy Whalen, Albert Evans, Sara Mearns, Megan Fairchild, Charles Askegard and Jared Angle. Last year, 30 student dancers performed in the concert. The performance is followed by a gala fundraiser for dance at USC.

Artists and Guest Artists

We regularly bring in well-known guest artists to stage major pieces or create work on our dancers. Recent guests include:

  • Chris Uchida (Twyla Tharp Dance)
  • Lila York (Paul Taylor Dance Company)
  • Nathan Trice (Complexions, nathantrice/RITUALS)
  • Amanda Miller (William Forsythe's Ballet Frankfurt)
  • Lynne Taylor-Corbett (Tony-winning choreographer)
  • Cathy McCann Buck (Paul Taylor Dance Company)

Original works by Thaddeus Davis and Tanya Wideman-Davis, of our resident professional dance company Wideman/Davis Dance, are also regularly created for (and with) our dancers. Students also have the opportunity to stage their own choreography in our Student Choreography Showcase performances.

Our Board

The mission of the USC Board of Dance is to develop a base of financial support to further the goals of the USC Dance Company. Additionally, the Board promotes the USC Dance Company to the community outside of the University of South Carolina through the planning and implementation of activities in an effort to raise funds for scholarships for the USC Dance Program.
