E. coli (Escherichia coli) is a type of bacteria that normally lives in our intestines and in the gut of some animals. While most types of E. coli are harmless, one strain known as enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) causes severe intestinal infection and symptoms. Dr. Melissa Ellermann, new Assistant Professor in the Department, published a recent study that demonstrates an important role for a metabolic product of arachidonic acid in inhibiting EHEC virulence. Her work is a major advance in the field and is highlighted in the podcast of the American Society for Microbiology. Hear more about it here!
