GABS students volunteered to do some river clean-up!

As a service project, GABS students partnered with Congaree Riverkeepers for a cleanup of the Smith Branch waterway at Earlewood Park on November 7th. Seven GABS members collected 485 individual pieces of litter, mostly plastic bags and other plastic material, that weighed a total of over 200 pounds. Congaree Riverkeepers collects extensive data about litter collected, and GABS' data can be viewed here. GABS students also had insightful discussions with Bill Strangler of Congaree Riverkeepers about the environmental legislation, community outreach projects, ongoing data collection and field work the group participates in. A great initiative, great work!
