Dr. Mark Smith, Carolina Distinguished Professor of History in the College of Arts and Sciences at USC, hosted Vice President for Research, Julius Fridriksson, on his podcast “Take On The South” on October 26. The two scholars discussed the University of South Carolina’s role in research as a Southern university and the projects and improvements in progress and to come at USC.

The discussion focused on such topics as the forthcoming health sciences campus in Columbia and the funding from major federal organizations, including the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. Vice President Fridriksson and Dr. Smith also discussed the importance of mentorship in STEM fields and research and how it can help guide junior faculty on the tenure track.
