Undergraduate Students are Invited to Office of Research Summer Workshop Series

The Office of the Vice President for Research is hosting a series of professional development workshops for undergraduate student researchers this summer. We invite all interested student researchers to participate in these workshops, and to sign up for our weekly summer research newsletter.

Topics, dates, times and locations for all workshops are listed below, and in the Summer Workshop Class Summary Document [pdf]. There is no registration required to attend most sessions, and all undergraduate researchers are welcome to participate.

Research and Ethics

Wednesday, May 30 • 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. • Sumwalt College, room 305 Presented by Dr. Jeff Dudycha, Professor, Department of Biological Sciences

In this workshop, we will present case studies to provide a framework for discussion of common ethical questions in research.


Effective Poster Presentations

Wednesday, June 6 • 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. • Sumwalt College, room 305
Presented by Dr. Lauren Clark, Research Program Manager, Office of Research

This workshop will guide students through the process of creating effective research posters using PowerPoint.


Reflecting on Your Research Experience

Wednesday, June 20 • 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. • Sumwalt College, room 305
Presented by Dr. Charles Pierce, Associate Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and USC Connect Faculty Fellow for Integrative Learning

This interactive workshop will introduce integrative learning and engage students in reflective thinking and writing exercises about their research experiences.


Preparing for Graduate School

Wednesday, June 27 • 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. • Sumwalt College, room 305
Presented by a panel of faculty and graduate students

In this workshop, a panel of faculty and graduate students will discuss reasons to consider graduate school, M.S. vs Ph.D. programs, and how to be a competitive candidate for graduate school. This workshop will also explain options for funding your graduate education, including assistantships and fellowships.


Resumés and Cover Letters

Wednesday, July 11 • 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. • Sumwalt College, room 305
Presented by Dr. Lauren Clark, Research Program Manager, Office of Research

This workshop will provide guidance on crafting effective resumes and cover letters in a format tailored to undergraduate student researchers.


Applying to Graduate School

Wednesday, July 18 • 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. • Sumwalt College, room 305
Presented by a panel of faculty and graduate students

This panel discussion will feature a discussion of the graduate school application process, with emphasis on how to select a graduate program and what to consider when looking for a graduate advisor. We will also discuss common parts of the application package, including research/personal statements, resumes and recommendation letters.


 

Other Student Research Training Opportunities

Environmental Health and Safety Training

All three training courses offered by the USC Environmental Health and Safety Office—Laboratory Safety, Hazardous Waste and Biosafety—will be offered for summer research program participants on Monday, May 21, in the Jones Physical Sciences Center, room 006.

1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.: Laboratory Safety

2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.: Hazardous Waste

3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.: Biosafety
