Office of Research offers summer research workshops for undergraduates

The Office of the Vice President for Research is very pleased to invite undergraduate researchers to join us for a series of research workshops this summer. Topics, dates, times and location are listed below. There is no registration required to attend these sessions, and all undergraduate researchers are welcome to participate.

Communication and Your Research Team

Wednesday, May 27 • 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Wardlaw, room 126
Presented by Dr. Lauren Clark, Research Program Manager, Office of Research

In this workshop, we will discuss communication, professionalism and working in a research team.  Research contracts will be introduced as an effective tool for communicating expectations.


Research and Ethics

Wednesday, June 10 • 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Wardlaw, room 126
Presented by Dr. Jeff Dudycha, Department of Biological Sciences

In this workshop, we will present case studies to provide a framework for discussion of common ethical questions in research. 


Preparing for Graduate School

Wednesday, June 17  3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Wardlaw, room 126
Presented by Wright Culpepper, Assistant Director of Recruitment and Special Events, USC Graduate School 

This workshop will feature a discussion of graduate school, the application process, and funding opportunities.  A panel of USC graduate students will answer questions about their experiences.


Effective Poster Presentations

Networking and Marketing Your Research Experience

This workshop will help you develop an “elevator speech” to describe your research experience.  This workshop will also provide tips for how to effectively network with your colleagues.


Resumes and Cover Letters

This workshop will provide guidance on crafting effective resumes and cover letters in a format tailored to undergraduate student researchers.
