Many faculty and instructors in higher education have little training on effective pedagogies. Thus, the purpose of this workshop is to help participants learn about research-based teaching and instructional practices in higher education. 

About the Presenter

Matthew Irvin joined the University of South Carolina in 2011 as a faculty member in the Department of Educational Studies. Irvin is currently an Associate Professor of Educational Psychology and Research, Director of the Yvonne & Schuyler Moore Child Development Research Center, and Co-Director of the South Carolina Center of Excellence for the Advancement of the Workforce and Knowledge Economy. His research largely focuses on the development and learning of rural youth.

Specific topics within his work include educational attainment, STEM learning, academic motivation, math course-taking, school context, online and distance education, risk and resilience, peer relations and bullying, and youth with disabilities. He has published 40 peer reviewed journal articles and secured approximately $12 million in grant funds including federal support from the National Science Foundation, Institute of Education Sciences, Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institute of Justice, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
