Statistics is the science of data. Students can use statistics and data science in
all fields, including public health, education, business, medicine, and engineering.
Furthermore, “statistician” and “data scientist” are consistently ranked among the
top jobs for graduates due to their high demand and excellent salaries.
We offer both undergraduate majors and minors . Majoring in statistics can give you a head start to a rewarding career! Our general
major is perfect for anyone who wishes to pursue a career in statistics and data analysis,
and our major with an actuarial science concentration is designed for students planning
a career as an actuary. Statistics is an ideal double major, too. Our minor is a great
complement to any health science, social science, business or marketing major.
For graduate students, we offer master's and Ph.D. programs . Here is a list of our recent Ph.D. graduates .
Data science and “big data analytics” are hot areas these days, as companies are realizing
the value of learning from large data sets. The statistics and computer science departments
have joined forces to offer a minor in data science . Courses such as Applied Multivariate Statistics and Data Mining (STAT 530) and
Big Data Analytics (STAT/CSCE 587) provide excellent training for budding data scientists.
Our faculty are engaged in research in a wide range of areas. We encourage all our students, including undergraduates,
to participate in research.
Our department is always sharing ideas. Whether it's through our student clubs and organizations or from the guest speakers we actively seek out to present on campus.
