Bio:

Maverick Huneycutt is a first-generation college student who earned his BA in History with magna cum laude honors and minors in both Anthropology and Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2022. He spent the next two years earning his MA in History at UNC-Charlotte under the direction of esteemed historian Dr. John David Smith. His MA thesis focused on slavery in North Carolina and is titled "Memories of Enslavement and the North Carolina WPA Ex-Slave Narrative Collection.”

Maverick's undergraduate thesis, focused on the impact of urban renewal in Charlotte, NC, was published in 2024 in Africana Annual, a new interdisciplinary journal published by the University of Kansas. Maverick has also presented papers at numerous conferences, including the Southern Historical Association Conference, which focused on his Charlotte research, and several sessions calling for the recognition of Indigenous genocide in the United States.

Maverick's academic focus is on slavery and race studies and Southern United States history, but he also holds a keen interest in Genocide Studies. While pursuing his PhD at the University of South Carolina, Maverick will also work at the Anne Frank Center.
