Longtime department chair dies

Julian Minghi died peacefully on July 10, 2024.

He joined the department in 1973 as chair, a position he held for the next 17 years. He retired from the university in 2001, but not before leaving a lasting mark on his colleagues, his students and the discipline. An Association of American Geographers' post memoralizes the contributions Minghi made to political geography -- and highlights the warmth and humor that characterized how he faced the world.

A memorial service in Columbia at he end of August allowed many to pay their last respects to the model scholar, teacher and friend.
