CeGIS promotes GIScience, spatial (big) data science, spatial analysis, and geospatial data sharing in geography and other disciplines (e.g., health science and social science) by partnering with research centers and institutions across the campus.

The Big Data Health Science Center (BDHSC) at the University of South Carolina is an innovation- driven enterprise that can facilitate and accelerate a sustained, high-caliber transformation of the university into a global leader in Big Data health science. The overarching goals of the BDHSC are to leverage the existing expertise and resources in Big Data science and healthcare research at UofSC, promote the utilization of Big Data analytics in healthcare research, academic training, and services improvement, and to accelerate the transformation of UofSC into a global leader in Big Data Health Science. 


logo of Hazards Vulnerability & Resilience Institute

The Hazards Vulnerability & Resilience Institute (HVRI) is an interdisciplinary research and training center focused on the development of spatial analytical information, data, methods, and application for integrating hazard and climate information to advance equitable planning and management and adaptive capacity in communities as they respond to disaster risks and climate change. In addition to basic research, HVRI engages with practitioners and communities to foster resilience and facilitates local, state, and federal efforts to improve emergency preparedness, planning, and recovery by providing technical assistance and translational products to foster evidentiary based policy and practice.

The Walker Institute is the center for global research and outreach on the University of South Carolina’s Columbia campus. Founded in 1961, the Walker Institute is dedicated to fostering cross- cultural understanding on campus, in South Carolina and around the world. As the university’s portal to the world, we help students, faculty and the public see the world through a global lens. The institute directs two interdisciplinary majors, six area minors and the university’s ROTC programs.

The International Center of Excellence on Big Earth Data for Coasts (ICoE-Coast) is a joint program between Department of Geography, USC, and the Hainan Key Laboratory of Earth Observation, China, established through the International Digital Belt and Road (DBAR) Science Program. The mission of the ICoE-Coast is to enable and support scientific activities by advancing Earth observation science, technology, data integration and dissemination to address environmental changes, disasters and resilience in coastal zones.
