Award recognizes his tireless promotion of SC geography

In a September 3 ceremony on campus, Dr. Don Jordan of the South Carolina Academy of Science presented Jerry Mitchell with the 2020 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Scientific Awareness. The award, one of four given annually by the Governor's Awards for Science program, honors an individual or team within the state whose achievements and contributions to science in South Carolina merit special recognition and to promote wider awareness of the quality and extent of scientific activity in South Carolina. Mitchell, the director of the Center for Excellence for Geographic Education and current chair of the Department of Geography, was recognized for his ardent promotion of geography throughout the state.
