Patrick McKenzie receives Boren award

Undergraduate geography/biology major to study in Jordan

Patrick McKenzie has been awarded a Boren Scholarship to coninue his study of Arabic in Amman, Jordan. This isn't Patrick's first opportunity to study abroad: the South Carolina Honors College student spent the spring of 2018 studying and conducting an independent research project in Panama.

Boren awards are meant to encourage the study of those languages less frequently taught in American schools by funding study abroad, providing awardees a chance to immerse themselves in the linguistic and cultural environment of their chosen languages. In exchange for this opportunity, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year, bringing their new knowledge to work on the challenges of global society, including: national security, sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness.

Congratulations, Patrick!
